Panel discussions and lectures on countering the threat of terrorism and violence marked the formal start of the 19th World Congress of Criminology in Doha.
HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani inaugurated the first in the Middle East event at Ritz Carlton Doha.
Delegates from 40 countries are attending the three-day Congress organised by the Police College under the Ministry of Interior (MoI), College of Law at Qatar University and the International Society of Criminology (ISC).
The inaugural ceremony was attended by a number of ministers, senior officials of the MoI and many experts from the security and legal sectors.

Dr Hassan Rashed al-Derham, president of Qatar University; Brigadier Dr Mohammed Abdullah al-Mohanna, director general of Police College; Dr Emilio C Viano, president of the ISC and president of the conference; Bianca Kopp, representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs, Crime (UNODC); Fatou Bensouda, prosecutor of the International Criminal Court; and Major General Engineer Abdulaziz al-Ansari, chairman of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee (NCTC) attended the opening session.
Dr al-Derham said that Qatar is keen to implement the strategic plan 2018-2022, which includes excellence in education and learning.
"We look forward to the outcome of the conference and we hope that it will contribute successfully to strengthening mechanisms to combat crime worldwide,” he said adding that the university is keen to host international scientific forums that would ensure academic and research achievements.
Brig al-Mohanna, who welcomed the guests, noted that the conference is a venue to exchange views and experiences on the challenges faced by the international community.
"This Congress will help the world find appropriate solutions to address the challenges. Qatar is showing interest towards achieving and activating the frameworks of international cooperation in confronting crime,” he said adding the MoI and the Police College are keen to apply the best international standards in security, academic, training and research system in accordance with Qatar Vision 2030.
Dr Emilio C Viano said the ISC is set to learn from others by understanding their experiences. He added that such conferences are an opportunity to get acquainted with the efforts being exerted, the modern methods that are followed and the big roles being played by all parties working in the field of combating crime.
The opening day marked the presentation of 50 papers in 13 subjects based on science, technology and teaching in criminology, researching, investigating and crime prevention. The conference comes within the framework of the implementation of the Doha Declaration issued at the end of the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The valedictory session will be held tomorrow.
