Qatar is planning big on renewable energy to charge electric vehicles, Kahramaa president Essa bin Hilal al-Kuwari told Gulf Times on the sidelines of the launching of Tarsheed Photovoltaic Station for Energy Storage and Charging Electric Vehicles.
"Such stations will be established across Qatar in co-operation with various stakeholders, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, combat climate change and maintain the economic and environmental balance," he explained.
Kahramaa is co-operating with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) to develop a complete plan to establish electric charging stations at various locations in the country.
“We are actively looking to make use of renewable energy, especially solar power which is the energy of the future. The cost is not a concern now and the goal is to spread the idea,” he said pointing out that the cost of these stations are declining.
Kahramaa's National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), is also looking to raise the share of electric cars to 10% of the total cars sold in Qatar by 2022. Kahramaa had earlier announced that it has plans to achieve a significant goal of making 3-5% of the total car population in the country green by 2022. The plan is to implement the mission with the co-operation from various stakeholders including the MoTC and Ministry of Energy and Industry.
Kahramaa is planning to set up 400 car charging stations across Qatar by 2022. In addition, photovoltaic stations will be also set up across the country.
As per the plan, charging points will be at shopping malls, residential areas, stadiums, parks and government offices. Apart from the photovoltaic station launched yesterday at Kahrama’s Mesaimeer Complex, electric charging stations are functional at Qatar Scientific Club, Kahramaa Main Building, Kahramaa Awareness Park Building, Alfardan Towers, St. Regis Doha and Marsa Malaz Kempinski at The Pearl-Qatar.
