The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education launched yesterday a guide on human rights on the sidelines of the 30th Doha International Book Fair.
The committee was represented in the launch by its Assistant Secretary-General Sultan bin Hassan al-Jamali.
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education was represented by head of the ministry’s visions centre Mona Sabah al-Kuwari.
The content of the secondary school educational guide included an introduction to human rights education, and general references in this regard, while its axes dealt with human rights in terms of origin and development, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to privacy, justice, and “women’s rights and its role in development” and the right to building a family, at work, a decent life, benefiting from the scientific revolution, and enjoying production, as well as the right to human solidarity, and “civil society is a field for exercising human rights.”
HE the Chairman of the NHRC Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri stressed the importance of the initiative, adding that the committee participated in the preparation of the guide in line with its powers mentioned in Law No 17 of 2010.
He highlighted the belief of the committee on the value the guide will provide in promoting and raising awareness on human rights principles.
The chairman of the NHRC stressed on the commitment of the wise leadership to supporting the human rights of everyone in Qatar whether citizens, residents, or visitors.
He noted that the constitution has clearly mentioned the importance of human rights.
He added that building new generations that are capable of leading their country in the future requires suitable preparation, noting that bringing up these promising generations entails raising awareness about the importance of human rights in every society.
Al-Marri said that people need to grow in an environment that respect their rights and freedoms in order for them to realise their potential.
Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Fawzia Abdulaziz al-Khater said, in the foreword of the guides, has stressed that every person has the right to live and learn, stressing that Qatar has endeavoured with all scientific, social and material potentials available to make education widespread throughout the world by spreading its culture, noting that the country has outlined the programmes and drawn up the plans that have been implemented widely in the world, and have ensured that education is available in every home within its commitment to human rights.
She also pointed out that the Ministry of Education and Higher Education seeks an integrated and comprehensive education for the benefit of people, stressing the importance of raising awareness of human rights and providing the necessary protection for individuals and developing their capabilities.
In his speech Sultan al-Jamali said this step is the first of its kind in the Gulf region and makes Qatar one of the leading countries in this field at the level of the Middle East, pointing out that launch of education guides confirms the real will of the wise leadership and those in charge of the country’s education process to develop the Qatari human being and to respect, promote and protect human rights.
