Qatari startup and the country’s first recycling company, Elite Paper Recycling (ERP), has officially opened the Eco Dome.
The initiative is part of the company’s campaign to raise awareness on the need for recycling and care for the environment.
Under the patronage of prominent Qatari businessman Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani, the Eco Dome is intended to educate students and the public on the negative effects of deforestation.
Speaking during the launch event at the New Industrial Area, EPR chairman Abdallah al-Suwaidi said the Eco Dome was the fulfilment of his vision of sustainable business models for Qatar.
“As a young entrepreneur, I always had a dream to innovate for my country. Today, I am very proud that the dream has become a reality, and I am gratified to announce that Elite is a pioneer in paper recycling in Qatar,” al-Suwaidi pointed out.
The Eco Dome is a state-of-the-art “educational/entertaining cultural tool” designed for schools and universities, as well as the public to explain what climate change is about and how to combat its effects through recycling paper.
He said the company has deployed over 100 trucks all over Qatar with more than 2,000 dumpsters stationed in strategic locations. EPR is now recycling more than 3,500 tonnes of paper per month, and collects free of charge from homes, government, companies, NGOs, embassies, schools and universities, he said.
“Today, we have more than 250 schools and universities partnering with us. We are proudly self-sufficient, producing for the first time in Qatar 100% recycled and 100% made in Qatar,” al-Suwaidi stressed.
In a speech, Sheikh Faisal said: “Such initiatives should increase awareness on the importance of maintaining a sustainable and healthy environment, and preventing desertification for us and for the safety of the future generations.
“As directed by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and as a part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, which considers environmental development as one of its most important pillars, Qatar is seeking to achieve balance and synergy between economic and social development, and preserving the environment.”
He added: “The state-of-the-art Eco Dome makes a remarkable 2D virtual reality experience for students and the youth, as an edutainment tool that allows them to learn through experiencing recycling and sustainability. I would like to thank Elite Paper Recycling for its outstanding efforts in the field of preserving the environment and raising awareness on the best practices to achieve this.”
