Every morning, when I wake up, I thank God that my name was on his wake up list. I check in with my loved ones and I thank God their names were on his wake up list too. It’s been 12 days since Kobe Bryant passed away, the posts on social media are lessening by the day, but for Kobe’s family, this will probably be a pain, that won’t lessen in time. Death should not be the only thing that reminds us of life being too short, isn’t that what love is supposed to do?
When someone young and famous like Kobe dies, our collective denial about the impermanence of life is cracked open. We have a momentary opportunity to see the preciousness of life and the inevitability of death as they truly are. That window of consciousness stays open for a while and then the shutter of denial comes down once again, before it does, I invite you to ask yourself about the choices you’d be making if you knew that one single moment of life was guaranteed. What do you want to be doing? What needs more of your attention and intention? Where are you wasting your valuable energy and time? Lets use this moment in our life not only to celebrate Kobe’s life, but also to reawaken ourselves.
As I reflect, my deepest wish is that we all live with kindness for ourselves and to others, strive for higher purpose, live out our truths, put aside our differences, make things right, love our life just the way it is and be grateful to have our loved ones beside us.
