HE the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari has met with the World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Geneva. She also met a number of other senior officials at the start of the 146th session of the WHO Executive Board, taking place at its headquarters until February 8.

The six-day Executive Board meeting was convened to agree on the agenda and resolutions to be considered at this year’s World Health Assembly.

Topics under discussion at this year’s meeting include the WHO response to large-scale emergencies, research and development for diseases with epidemic potential, antimicrobial resistance and promoting the health of migrants.

HE Dr al-Kuwari represented Qatar during the Executive Board meeting and led discussions on a number of key topics including antimicrobial resistance, patient safety, World Cup and emergency preparedness, and collaboration between FIFA and WHO.

Dr Ghebreyesus stated that he was looking forward to working with Qatar and FIFA to deliver a healthy World Cup 2022. He also thanked HE Dr al-Kuwari for her leadership and commended her commitment to patient safety.

HE Dr al-Kuwari also met with a number of senior officials at the WHO, including deputy director-general Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, Health Emergencies Programme executive director Dr Michael Ryan, and assistant director general for antimicrobial resistance Prof Hanan Balkhi.

She also held meetings with Joyce Cook, chief social responsibility officer of FIFA and secretary general of the FIFA Foundation, Dr Gaudenz Silberschmidt, director health and multilateral partnerships, Dr Ahmed al-Mandhari, regional director EMRO and Myriam Burkhard, head, Corporate Communications and Global Public Affairs.
