Qatar elected to chair Technical Committee for Intellectual Property at Arab League

Qatar has been elected to chair the Technical Committee for Intellectual Property at the Arab League, for a period of two years. This came during the 10th meeting of the committee, held at the headquarters of the League of Arab States’ General Secretariat in Cairo, Egypt, recently.The Technical Committee for Intellectual Property is concerned with setting rules for co-operation between Arab countries in the field of intellectual property rights protection. With the committee’s central role being the enhancement of Arab awareness regarding intellectual property issues, all while encouraging innovation.The committee members unanimously elected Amna Jaber al-Kuwari, director of the Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as chairperson of the Technical Committee for a period of two years. The election of Qatar to chair the Technical Committee reflects the tremendous interest that the State attaches to intellectual property issues. The committee members have entrusted Qatar with this position in recognition of the progress it has made in this strategic field, the ministry said in a statement.During the meeting, the committee reviewed the recommendations of its ninth meeting in February, as well as the implementation of the recommendations of the sub-committees on industrial property and copyright and related rights. The committee also agreed on establishing a regional network of technology and innovation support centres, all while discussing mechanisms to implement statistics and specific indicators of the reality of industrial property in Arab countries.
