The Public Parks Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) in co-ordination with various municipalities participated in the ongoing one million tree-planting campaign. The participation came as part of MME’s efforts to support Qatar’s efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability.
The Doha Municipality, according to a press statement by MME, participated in a campaign at Old Airport park where it was attended by the director of Doha Municipality and directors of various departments along with Central Municipal Council (CMC) member Sheikha al-Jufairi.
With this latest initiative, the total number saplings, transplanted by Doha Municipality, has reached 600. Al-Daayen Municipality also carried out a tree planting campaign and planted 100 trees at Simaisma beach.
The tree planting initiative was announced in March 2019 during the seventh International Agricultural Exhibition (AgriteQ) and the first Qatar International Environmental Exhibition (EnviroteQ).
The initiative was launched to support international efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability. It also aims to sustain water resources, use treated water for irrigation, reduce waste of water resources, enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, increase green areas and reduce gas emissions.
The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar is implementing the campaign, which will continue until the end of 2021. The committee is responsible for five major tasks including the construction of central public parks, provision of dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles, development of the Doha Corniche, development of Central Doha and increasing afforestation and greenery areas.
