Al Nakheel Agriculture and Trading Company, in partnership with AG Middle East, recently conducted their fifth workers’ election by inviting the workers of both companies to choose their representatives.
The election was aimed at ensuring the welfare, safety and security of workers and providing them with a better working environment.
The selected candidates will represent them in a Joint Committee that’s entrusted to discuss all issues related to workers and their rights with representatives of the company’s board of directors with the objectives being in addressing workers’ issues, providing adequate training, developing their performance, nurturing their cultures and improving compliance with occupational safety and health regulations and means of preventing risks.
The election held at the Asian Town Cricket Stadium was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (MADLSA), the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy and the International Labour Organisation in addition to representatives from the Human Rights Commission and numerous ambassadors from countries representing different nationalities of the workers.
Around 4,000 workers participated in the election to select their desired candidates for a period of two years. The elected representatives will work to discuss and resolve various issues related to them and their rights through the Joint Committee meetings alongside the representative from the board of directors from the two companies.
This comes in implementation of the provisions of Chapter 13 of Labour Law No 14 of 2004, and the decision of HE the Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs No 21 of 2019, and following systems of local and international rules and generally accepted in this regard.
The two companies, according to an official press statement, believe in Qatar’s efforts to promote and ensure workers’ rights through the laws and decisions that are being applied with their important and effective role in the development of the country. The two companies hold labour elections once every two years to improve the conditions of workers and improve their well-being. They implement strategies and policies that highlight the security and safety of the work environment in a realistic and practical way that transmit a worker’s grievances or issues via representatives to the higher management and works to achieve lasting progress and development in the work environment so that it reflects on the workers and the company with the best results.
Nakheel Landscapes was established in February 1998 under the name of Al Nakheel Agriculture and Trade Company.
The company employs more than 3,600 permanent employees and owns a large fleet consisting of 1,200 units of machinery and vehicles with 450,000sq m of plant nurseries, modern facilities and more.
AG Middle East focuses primarily on agriculture and modern irrigation methods. The company has more than 1,600 employees and various projects throughout Qatar.
