Ask your kids what they already know
There are a lot of things that your kids will be wondering about, like why can’t they go outside and why do they have to wash their hands more than they used to do, why they should be wearing a mask and gloves whenever they leave the house for an urgent errand! It’s best if you listen to their narrative about this whole situation, ask them what they already know and try to comprehend where their mind is at. If you have younger kids, then try asking them if they heard you or someone on TV talk about why so many people are getting sick?
Be honest with your kids
Telling your kids that you do not know something is not that difficult, especially when children ask clever questions that you cannot answer. In this case, it’s best if you learn it together, this way your kids will feel that they have contributed to your knowledge. Giving children some control will encourage them to speak up their mind, and as a parent, this is something you should respect, as it will prepare you for the conversation you are going to have with them.
Make them lead the way
Offering too many details isn’t necessary! So it’s best if you stay within their comfort zone. After asking them questions, you will understand the premise of their comfort zone. For example, if your child asks why they can’t go outside and play, then address the issue, otherwise you do not have to bring it up at all!
Ask what their fears are
As a parent, always make sure you know what they fear and what bothers them, they might tell you that they are afraid of getting sick, here you can reassure them that kids do not get sick as much as adults do and calmly remind them that it’s not going to happen to them. Tell your kids that it is okay to be stressed out and that your family is going to get through these tough times together as a team. Lastly, you should keep checking on your kids and try to answer their questions as much as you can, without instilling fear in them, try to make it seem normal and understand that there is a set of simple rules that needs to be followed and this is the only way things will get better. What are you waiting for? Grab your kids and have the coronavirus conversation!
