The social distancing phenomenon triggered by the novel coronavirus pandemic has been introducing people to new behavioural and social norms.
The challenging times have forced families to stay at homes and spend most of their time within the boundary of their house. The biggest test for people is how to keep themselves mentally positive and physically healthy because staying inside the house for a long time may not be an easy task for some people.
Discussions with different fitness and well-being coaches in last four weeks or so have revealed that people need to remain physically active and mentally positive to ward off the negative psychological impact of the outbreak. The results can be more effective if the physical activity undertaken also accompanies fun and enjoyment.
The idea is to have fun and maintain fitness at the same time. It can be an awe-inspiring, joy-inducing, and full-throttled dance experience. Salsation is a fun and addictive, functional dance workout. The dance enthusiasts and students learn the art of moving to world rhythms while getting fit. Salsation can be so much more than just a dance class – it is the result of years of research and development.
Rumz Dominic Morina is a Salsation master-trainer in Qatar. A young martial arts black belt and a music lover, she got attracted to the dance for fitness, for fun. An interior designer by profession, Rumz learnt different dance styles and became the first Salsation master-trainer in the Middle East region. She is a passionate dancer and eager trainer who loves to bring smiles to the faces of people.
“I am obsessed with dance and fitness. Dance and fitness are a part of my everyday lifestyle and it is something that I cannot live without. Salsation is a fun and unique dance fitness programme that combines musicality, lyrical expression and functional training. However, by profession, I am an interior designer working in a sports channel,” said Rumz.
Stuck at home, the master trainer has been missing what she has been doing but at the same time trying to keep up with the new norms. “While staying at home, I have been pretty much doing what I was doing before quarantine, but just in a different way. I am still working from home like many other people. I spend a fair amount of time on my laptop finishing my projects. Fitness has also been a challenge while staying at home but I have been trying my best to not lose motivation to keep training, dancing, and creating choreographies.”
Taking solace in modern technology, Rumz has kept training her students and friends online. “This situation has really taught me how grateful I need to be with everything I could enjoy before the quarantine. The thing I miss the most right now is my Salsation classes, dancing and working out with my friends. We also had a ‘Salsation Instructor Training’ that we needed to postpone due to the health crisis. But its 2020 and technology is advanced enough to carry out our important tasks, meetings, etc. I have been using the amazing application called Zoom to conduct Salsation classes, Salsation workshops and Salsation instructor trainings online. Off course it is not the same as face to face contact but it is something new and it is working quite well. So far I am very happy with the results and I think that the situation has exposed us all to adapt to the new methods of online teaching and online learning.”
The piece of advice I would like to share with everyone at home is to just stay calm because this time will pass eventually. Don’t forget to focus on your health. Eat healthy and please stay active as much as you can even though you are at home. Do things that you could not do before because of lack of time. Invest in yourself and do something that will lift your spirits   (for example, take an online class) Meditate, stay positive, and most importantly, do not lose connections with your friends. Even if you can’t see them physically, stay in touch as much as you can virtually.”
