The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) announced on Tuesday the registration of 677 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), and the recovery of 68 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recovered cases to 1,134, according to official Qatar News Agency (QNA).

The MoPH pointed out that most of the new cases registered are expatriate workers in different occupations and who have been in contact with previously discovered cases.

There are also new cases of Covid-19 among groups of workers from outside the Industrial Area who were identified through testing by the MoPH.

The discovery of the latter cases were a result of the compounded efforts of the ministry's search and tracking teams, which contributed to the early detection.

The remainder of the new cases infected with Covid-19 come from citizens and residents who contracted the virus from their family members, who in turn got the infection through their workplaces or other places where they were exposed to infected people.

All the new infected cases have been quarantined where they are receiving the necessary medical care.

The MoPH said most of the infected cases being identified are in people who are showing only mild symptoms of the virus. It added that the noticeable increase in the number of confirmed new Covid-19 cases is due to several reasons, including that the spread of the virus has begun to enter the peak stage where numbers are expected to continue to increase before they begin to gradually decline.

Another reason was that the MoPH has redoubled its efforts in tracking the Covid-19 transmission chains and expanded the search for infected people by conducting extensive and proactive tests of groups of contacts with people who have been confirmed with the disease previously. This early detection of many cases of infection helps reduce the spread of the virus further.

According to a tweet from the MoPH, with a total of 2,898 people tested for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, as many as 88,607 have been tested so far in Qatar.

There are 11,921 positive cases to date in Qatar and 10,777 currently undergoing treatment. The total number of Covid-19 deaths so far in Qatar is 10, according to the tweet.

The MoPH called on all members of society to stay at home and not go out except in cases of necessity and take care to implement preventive measures and maintain social distancing from others, including in the workplace and public places. The Ministry reminds people to use a face mask and avoid social visits to reduce their risk of contracting the virus.

The MoPH also urged the public to visit its website regularly to view the latest information and instructions related to Covid-19, QNA added.
