* Openings come as part of the Improvement of Main Roads in Al Nasr Area project
* Remaining works scheduled to be completed by Q3 2020

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the opening of 0.6km of Al Nasr Street and 1.8km of Al Mirqab Al Jadeed Street in addition to four signallised intersections to traffic.

This comes as part of the Improvement of Main Roads in Al Nasr Area project, the authority said in a statement.

Rashed al-Zeyara, project engineer in the Roads Projects Department, stressed the importance of Al Mirqab Al Jadeed Street and its strategic location in the heart of the Fereej Al Nasr area linking Suhaim Bin Hamad Street (C-Ring Road) and Doha Expressway, two of the most vital roads in Doha serving a large number of daily commuters.

He also highlighted the role played by Al Mirqab Al Jadeed Street, and the equally important Al Nasr Street, in accommodating the increasing traffic flow in the area. Both streets are located in densely populated residential areas and also cater to several commercial centres and shops as well as health and educational facilities and public amenities.

Al-Zeyara explained that Ashghal was keen to open these streets and intersections as they would significantly ease traffic flow in the area and improve road safety in addition to facilitating access to many residential areas such as Al Mirqab, Fereej Al Nasr, Fereej Bin Mahmoud and Al Sadd.

The four newly opened signalised intersections are as follows: intersection of Al Mirqab Al Jadeed Street with Mohamed Bin Qasim Street; intersection of Mohamed Bin Qasim Street with Al Kinana Street; intersection of Othman Bin Talha Street with Mohamed Bin Qasim Street; and intersection of Al Mirqab Al Jadeed Street with Suhaim Bin Hamad Street (C-Ring Road).

In order to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the vehicular flow on Al Mirqab Al Jadeed Street, traffic was changed to one direction on the two lanes of the street from the intersection with Mohamed Bin Qasim Street until the intersection with Suhaim Bin Hamad Street (C-Ring Road). The layout of the rest of the street from the intersection with Mohamed Bin Qasim Street towards Al Amir Street is kept unchanged and thus accommodates one lane in each direction, Ashghal has said.

Besides constructing new signalised intersections, the upgrade works executed as part of the project also included improving infrastructure services - such as developing 8.3km of a stormwater drainage network, 6.5km of a foul sewer network and creating a 5.8km-long treated sewerage effluent network in addition to upgrading and protecting the existing electricity and telecommunication lines.

Besides, the project also included the provision of 1,500 parking bays and construction of pedestrian paths and crossings along with upgrading the lighting systems and road markings. As part of the project, the stormwater drainage network at the intersection of Mohamed Bin Qasim Street with Al Kinana Street was also upgraded.

Ashghal has stressed that it will continue the upgrade works on Zaid Al Khail Street, Al Kinana Street and Al Ghouta Street as part of the Improvement of Main Roads in Al Nasr Area project, in addition to improving the infrastructure services.

The remaining works are scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of 2020.
