The Research and Graduate Studies Department at Qatar University (QU) has launched the Summer 2020 Internship Programme for undergraduate and graduate students in a number of research centres.
The proposal for this year is in line with the safety and security measures and preventive precautions in confronting the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), by using electronic platforms supported by QU and taking into account the safety of its students, faculty and researchers in the labs of the research centres.
Summer research internship programmes for students is quite important, as it is part of the transformation strategy (2018-2022) of QU, known for its excellence in education and research. It aims to train students in research methods and techniques and enhance their research skills through their work in research laboratories and participation in research projects with distinguished research cadres in the Research and Graduate Studies Department.
The Centre for Advanced Materials led by Dr Nasser A Alnuaimi, offers a summer internship programme for undergraduate students from the majors of science, engineering, or other related disciplines from June 7-25. The objective is to support the trainee students and help them acquire knowledge about advanced materials, their classifications and applications. The centre addresses several research fields including nanotechnology, sustainable materials, polymers, composites, corrosion studies, mining, and renewable energy methods. The centre is open to 24 students.
The Biomedical Research Centre led by Prof Asmaa al-Thani, announced that registration for the summer internship programme will be until May 31. The programme will accommodate twenty trainees, and the duration is from June 7 to June 25. The topics include introduction to medical and biological research, animal ethics, genetic studies, as well as microbiology, cell culture, and the study of chicken embryos and zebra fish.
The Laboratory Animal Research Centre laboratories, led by Dr Hamda al-Naemi, will host the summer internship from June 7 to 25 to support students and researchers and enhance knowledge of biosafety practices, principles of diagnostic techniques, health and environmental monitoring and waste management programmes. The programme promotes interaction with the rodent health monitoring specialists to create and carry out diagnostic work with animal samples.
Meanwhile, the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute, led by Prof Hassan al-Sayed, has scheduled the internship programme from June 7to 18. The target group is postgraduate and undergraduate students who major in social science subjects such as economics, sociology, psychology, or business management. The internship programme includes designing policy studies, carrying out fieldwork, data analysis and writing policy reports.
The Central Laboratory Unit led by Dr Mohamed Alsafran, will participate this year in the summer 2020 research internship in three specialised training programmes of five days each for 15 trainees each.
