* Construction of 10 projects for breeding and fattening 50,000 sheep expected to begin in coming two weeks so that production starts before year-end: official
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has lined up 39 new projects to achieve food security in the country, a senior official has said.
Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser al-Thani, Assistant Undersecretary of Agriculture and Fisheries Affairs at the MME, told local Arabic daily Arrayah that these projects will help the country's food security efforts by boosting the production of vegetables, sheep, goats, fish and eggs.
All the projects are in the stage of contract awarding and development, and production will begin by the next season, according to the MME official.
Sheikh Dr Faleh stressed the possibility of local yards continuing to market farm produce throughout the summer, with 700 tonnes of sales recorded last week. This speaks volumes about the production levels, he said, stressing that the country's food security strategy is achieving its goals.
The project includes buying young sheep and goats directly from breeders at reasonable prices, setting up 10 greenhouse projects to produce 21,000 tonnes of vegetables annually, implementation of four projects for green fodder production and two projects for organic fertilisers production with a capacity of 12,000 tonnes annually, according to the daily.
These are in addition to two projects for fish farming in floating cages with a capacity of 4,000 tonnes, fish farming projects, producing animals for sacrifice locally during the upcoming Eid al-Adha, production of 80,000 hamour seeds for the marine environment and fish farms, and production of 180mn eggs annually.
Besides, a project is being developed to provide technical support for agricultural initiatives and interest-free loans for farmers.

He noted that the MME is working hard to support food security projects by granting land at nominal rates to Qatari private sector investors. This is in addition to providing the opportunity to obtain interest-free loans through Qatar Development Bank and extending technical support and guidance required for agricultural projects.
