The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) ,in cooperation with the General Cleanliness Department, the Natural Reserves Department and the Public Relations Department, has conducted a comprehensive public campaign at all beaches to raise awareness about the Public Hygiene Law and the necessity to maintain the beaches clean and avoid unregulated discarding of waste.

The campaign also aims at enhancing public awareness on the importance of maintaining safe social distancing. The campaign coincides with the second phase of the lifting of the restrictions imposed to curb any further spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) among the public. Accordingly, garbage collection bags were distributed among the beach goers, besides related awareness brochures in three languages.

Nasser Mohamed al-Nuaimi, director of the Municipal Control Department at Al Shamal Municipality, pointed out that MME pays great importance to maintain the cleanliness of beaches and islands as key recreational destinations for the people, and provides all the necessary human and material resources to achieve this target. This helps such spots receive visitors all through the year. In addition, MME is keen to constantly improve and upgrade the public services.

During the last few weeks, five violation reports were issued according to the Public Hygiene Law , for disposing of waste indiscriminately at the beaches. He called upon the public to cooperate with the authorities concerned to protect the marine life in the country.

Abdulaziz Mohamed, operations officer at the Cleanliness Section at Al Shamal Municipality, pointed out that around 850 tonnes of different waste materials were removed from the various beaches of the municipality during the previous period.

Fawaz al-Sada, supervisor of beaches and islands and the General Cleanliness Department, said that while the campaign mainly targets raising public awareness, inspection campaigns are going on to spot the violators.

Saood Abdulaziz, Sealine Unit officer at the Natural Reserves Unit, pointed out that waste bags were distributed among visitors as part of the awareness campaign while they were told about the importance of maintaining safe distance from each other.
