The citizens’ subdivisions projects continue to play a major role in the Public Works Authority's (Ashghal) plans for comprehensive infrastructure development in Qatar.  According to the latest figures available with Ashghal, 33 infrastructure projects are being implemented at a total cost of QR13.7bn under this initiative.
These projects will serve 30,000 residential plots in 17 areas, including Al Kharaitiyat, Rawdat Egdaim, Izghawa, Al Wukair South, Al Shamal, Al Mearad, southwest of Muaither, Al Ebb & Leabaib, Al Duhail South, Umm Lekhba, Jeryan Nejaima, Ain Khaled North and others.
While addressing a remotely held event recently where nine new construction contracts were signed with Qatari companies for projects under the initiative, Ashghal president Dr Saad bin Ahmad al-Muhannadi noted that there are directives from HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani to continue working at the same pace and with the same commitment to implement all infrastructure works under the said projects in accordance with Ashghal’s plans despite the current worldwide economic crisis.
Last week, Ashghal had signed nine new contracts worth QR3.6bn with Qatari companies for projects that will serve 5,111 residential plots in six areas: Semaisma South, Al Ebb & Leabaib, Umm Slal Mohamed, Al Wajba East, Mebaireek and Al Meshaf South.
Work on the new projects is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2020.
Launched in 2014, the project has witnessed the implementation of development plans for around 34,918 land plots, according to Ashghal. Of these, 5,045 plots are in new citizens’ subdivisions and 29,873 plots are in existing citizens’ subdivisions.
The projects, being implemented by Ashghal, provide roads as well as pedestrian and cycling paths along with infrastructure development works such as sewage, surface and groundwater and treated sewage effluent networks.
More than 22,000 land plots in 18 areas saw the implementation of development works as part of the projects between 2014 and 2017. Of the developed plots, 20,637 were in existing areas while 1,829 were in new citizens' land plot areas.
During this phase, Ashghal completed 23 projects to develop infrastructure in various areas serving 15,108 citizens' land plots while seven projects were completed in Doha North, serving more than 7,000 citizens' plots. Ashghal also completed four projects in the vicinity of Doha while seven projects were implemented to serve more than 4,000 plots in Muaither West (Al Manaseer).
These were in addition to five projects in the west of Doha city and four projects to develop sewage networks serving around 3,000 plots, as well as 17 projects to develop roads and integrated infrastructure serving 10,000 plots and two land-grading projects serving almost 2,000 plots.
With a total value of around QR4bn, 10 contracts were signed as part of the initiative in January this year. The proposed projects will serve more than 8,400 plots across 10 areas in the north, south and west of the country. All the contracts were given to Qatari companies. In May 2019, seven new construction contracts with a total value of QR3.2bn were inked by Ashghal to serve a total of 3,090 land plots. Earlier, in May 2018, four new contracts totaling QR1.5bn were signed to develop infrastructure on plots under the citizens' residential projects in Al Wukair South in Al Wakra Municipality.
In October 2018, Ashghal signed five contracts worth QR2.7bn with Qatari companies for developing infrastructure facilities for 5,192 plots of land in different areas under the citizens’ residential scheme.
