The Iranian Health Ministry yesterday announced renewed coronavirus restrictions in Tehran from this weekend, due to a dramatic rise in infections.
From today, events and gatherings are banned and cafes and tea houses are to close, a ministry spokesperson said according to the news agency ISNA.
Sports events, except games of the first football league, would be cancelled and one third of government officials would be working from home, the spokesperson added.
After restrictions were eased in May, people began neglecting health and safety precautions and stopped wearing masks, resulting in a renewed spread of the virus.
In the last 24 hours, Iran recorded almost 2,400 new infections and 180 deaths, bringing the numbers to a total of 269,440 confirmed cases and 13,791 deaths from the coronavirus.
