Mexico's official death toll from the novel coronavirus has risen to 46,688, the Health Ministry said on Friday.
The Latin American country reported a record 8,458 Covid-19 associated deaths in 24 hours to surpass Britain's 46,119 death toll.
Only the United States and Brazil have recorded more deaths connected with the respiratory disease caused by the virus.
The official number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 in Mexico is at least 424,637, according to Mexican health authorities.
It ranks sixth-highest globally in terms of cases, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.
However, the real number of infections is likely to be higher in Mexico, as comparatively few people are being tested there.
Latin America is currently one of the pandemic's global hotspots.
