Shoppers seeking fresh vegetables and fruits can enjoy a safe and convenient shopping experience at the modern and well-equipped Al Sailiya Central Market, which has replaced the old Abu Hamour Central Market. The turnout of customers has begun to increase gradually immediately after the Eid holidays with moderate numbers seen on Thursday. There is a steady supply of fresh products on a daily basis. The fully air-conditioned market helps traders and vendors preserve their goods properly while on display for sale.

Strict entry regulations are in place Al Sailiya Central Market

This was not the case at the old market, where large amounts of fruits and vegetables were discarded daily due to being exposed to the open-air heat, resulting in a big waste of food products and loss for the traders. Though the prices at the new market is slightly higher compared to the old market, many customers have expressed their satisfaction at the new place.
“It is an excellent place to go shopping. There are ample covered parking lots, a good number of entry and exit points and one can leisurely shop for the best options without feeling exhausted unlike the old market where summer used to be an ordeal," said Ahmed, a regular customer. He does not mind driving a longer distance to go to Al Sailiya Central Market though the old market was easily accessible for most Doha residents.
Al Sailiya Central Market has three main sections: The wholesale market where fruits and vegetables are sold by box or sack; the retail market, where produce is sold by kilo or bundle; and the Omani market that used to be adjacent to the Abu Hamour central market, where customer can buy things such incense, spices, dates, decoration plants, honey, gardening necessities and accessories, and other traditional items.
As part of the ongoing precautionary measures to contain any potential spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), sanitisation works are carried out constantly at the market. Customers are not allowed in without a body temperature check and showing the green healthy code on Ehteraz mobile app. Besides, there are some Qatar Red Crescent Society volunteers who gently remind customers to wear their face mask properly on, encourage physical distancing. Unlike the old market, there is almost no need for porters to help the customers because the new market has adequate number of shopping carts designed to suit the purpose.
Examples of recently seen prices at Al Sailiya Central Market include QR20-30 for a box of sweet melons of around six pieces, QR10-15 for a box or around six kg of tomatoes, QR15-18 for a box of eggplants of around 5kg, QR25 for a box of around six pieces of small Indian pumpkin. Dates of most types were not much on display and sold at higher prices than usual due to the limited quantities, but most other types of vegetables and fruits are available at the market for reasonable prices and good quantities giving customers multiple options. The market is open to the customers throughout the week, but only in the morning.
