Qatar Museums (QM) highlighted a unique artwork titled ‘A Message of Peace to the World’ by Iraqi artist Ahmed al-Bahrani to mark the International Day of Peace 2020 yesterday.
The bronze sculpture is located at Hamad International Airport’s passenger train’s South Node station. It honours the work of Qatar-based non-profit organisation Reach Out To Asia (Rota), which supports primary and secondary education in underprivileged countries throughout Asia.
In recognition of the vital work Rota has done, al-Bahrani, who has been living in Doha since 1999, conceived the sculpture by drawing on Rota’s logo.
The artwork in a shape of a cube consists of a formula in which investment in economic security and education equates to the well-being of children. Al-Bahrani has folded the logo into the shape of a cube such that the surfaces of the sculpture are elaborated with the iconographic elements that stand for Rota’s mission, with the sun symbolising hope and happiness that radiates from its apex.
QM noted that the annual celebration began in 1982 with the ringing of the Peace Bell at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Since then, the International Day of Peace has been observed around the world on September 21 and is devoted to solidifying the ideals of peace by observing non-violence for 24 hours, according to QM.
“Peace means much more than an absence of war and through this day we can take the first step by creating harmony at our homes, schools, workplace, and even in our communities,” QM said.
