Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that trade and prosperity in the tribal areas depend on peace in Afghanistan, and that the tribal areas would flourish if the talks between Afghanistan and the Taliban are successful.
Addressing a gathering in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)’s Mohmand District, the prime minister said that the reconciliation process has started between the Taliban and Afghanistan, and that he prays there is peace in Afghanistan.
He said that all provinces had promised that 3% of the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award will be given for development of tribal districts.
However, he regretted that only KP has given its share, while the other provinces are yet to allocate its share of funds for the purpose.
The prime minister continued that the government will provide all possible funds for the socio-economic development of the tribal districts.
Khan said that he has directed the ministry of planning in this regard.
The prime minister pointed out that the tribal districts lag far behind in terms of development.
The prime minister said that the border markets are also being opened, which will provide opportunities to the local people to trade with Afghanistan.
Khan said that the focus of present government is to uplift the weaker segments of the society and develop the backward areas, including those in Sindh, Punjab, and Baluchistan.
He, however, warned that there are “elements” which do not want peace in Afghanistan.
Earlier, Prime Minister Khan inaugurated the Nahakki Tunnel and Sheikh Zaid Road in Mohmand.
He was briefed by the officials on the development projects in Mohmand district.
Later, he visited Bajaur District and performed the groundbreaking of Timargarh-Khar-Mamad Gat road.
These projects will provide better means of transportation, trade and job opportunities to the people of Mohmand and Bajaur.
Khan also visited Peshawar and inaugurated the Surgical and Allied Services Block of Lady Reading Hospital.
Addressing doctors and healthcare professionals on this occasion, the premier said that reforms have been introduced in all sectors, including the healthcare system, to ensure transparency and maintain a system of check and balance.
