The summer season is coming to an end for me, we took a break from the usual crazy, demanding pace of life. I have been away from Doha from the last two and a half months, but after a week of a holiday I find myself missing the set pattern of my day in Doha.
I find there’s a comfort certainty to it. You know what has to be done by what time. I know it makes life quite regimented, but when the routine isn’t followed for a protracted period, I feel a bit lost and anxiety can creep in.
The idea of travelling and being away from home makes it seem like there is no place for any kind of routine, but I believe there is no more important time to stick to a routine than during the time away. Our routines are like anchors that keep our minds peaceful and focused and our bodies rested.
A routine is not the same thing as a schedule. A schedule is a list of items organised by date and time that can change daily, weekly, or monthly. On the other hand, a routine is more like a rhythm you follow. Routines can switch up from time to time to accommodate for things like different seasons and holidays.
The biggest advantage of a routine is that it creates touch points throughout your busy days that let your brain know when familiar things are going to happen. Things like meals times, prayer time, meditation, exercise, family time, quiet time and bedtimes. I find having a routine reduces stress for myself and everyone around me..
Every person and every family are different, creating a successful routine that you will stick to requires taking everyone’s needs into consideration.
However difficult it may seem to squeeze in those 7-8 hours a night, especially during the busy holiday times. In order to keep things running smoothly, you need to make good, consistent sleep a priority for you and your family. Sleep is the cornerstone of good health, both mental and physical.
The morning time is particularly scared to me, it begins with prayer, meditation and gratitude. It’s always a good idea to try to catch the whole family together for even 10 minutes in the morning over the breakfast table to check-in on what everyone has going on during the day.
