A team of Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) officials has visited Education City Stadium to follow up on the workflow of the district cooling plant there.
The team was led by Abdulaziz al-Hammadi, director of the District Cooling Services Department, who was accompanied by engineers from the department.
The plant, according to a press statement by Kahramaa, is characterised by a cooling capacity of up to 40,000 refrigeration tonnes (RTs). It’s equipped with the latest devices and intelligent control and monitoring systems to achieve energy efficiency. These are linked, through a control system, to other energy centres in Education City, giving them greater flexibility in terms of operation and control.
The district cooling system supplies chilled water to a number of power transmission centres inside the stadium, which in turn distribute it to a number of air treatment units to ensure the required temperature for stands, the playing field and other facilities.
The district cooling system used at the stadium involves an innovative and environment-friendly technology and has one of the most efficient and energy-saving systems that saves about 40% of electricity and, in turn, natural gas consumption.
Reducing natural gas consumption leads to a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional cooling solutions as well as saving 98% of drinking water through the use of potable water, the statement adds.
Kahramaa is urging those concerned to switch to using treated water instead of potable water in cooling operations in order to enhance water security. By monitoring district cooling services, the corporation looks to provide electricity and drinkable water, sustain water resources and preserve the environment in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
