An array of cultural activities, exhibitions, and panel discussions in Qatar this month provides residents and visitors an opportunity to explore the country’s rich heritage.
In an e-mail to Culture Pass members, Qatar Museums (QM) said that the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim (FBQ) Al Thani Museum has opened a new section dedicated to sports, which includes the history of Qatari clubs and memorabilia from international sports stars such as boxer Mohamed Ali, Qatari rally driver Nasser al-Attiyah, Qatari racer Mohamed al-Nasr, and German Formula 1 racer Michael Schumacher.
“Various objects from Qatari sports clubs such as Al Gharrafa and Al Rayyan are added to the collection, as are photographs and sports shirts signed by their famous owners,” FBQ Museum posted on Facebook. “A selection of soccer balls signed by, for instance, international soccer player Ronaldo and by the player of the Mexican national soccer team Hector Moreno, who now plays for Al Gharrafa, complement the new sports section.”
FBQ Museum encourages members of the public to visit and “experience these exceptional collections and to get closer to athletes who had tremendous influence on all of us since decades”.
Community members in Qatar also stand to benefit from the initial roll out of QM activities and tours, through Airbnb Experiences and co-hosted by the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), which include Learn Calligraphy @MIA, Learn about the Art of Illumination @MIA, Explore the History of Islamic Art @MIA, Explore Unique Architecture of the MIA, and Afternoon Tea in Jiwan.
The QM is planning to expand its Airbnb Experiences with tours and activities by Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Qatar, IDAM, the Public Art Department, and the Division of Cultural Heritage in the coming months.
The Doha Fire Station will be hosting a 3D object scanning and printing workshop using digital methodologies and techniques at its Fab Lab on November 9 and 16, between 5pm and 6.30pm.
It is open for 17-24 year olds.
A panel discussion is also set to take place on November 11 at the Fire Station Cinema, featuring the participating artists in the group exhibition (using nature as a medium and subject) opening on November 4 at Gallery 4, from 7pm-8.30pm.
Art enthusiasts can also take part in an art lesson with artist Ismael Azzam at Mathaf to learn techniques in portraiture drawing using pencil and charcoal and paint.
It takes place every Sunday and Wednesday, from 4pm-7pm.
Families with children aged four to 12 years can “explore art through storytelling and explore storytelling through art by reading together, artwork analysis, and taking part in hands-on learning activities” in a virtual meet from 3pm-4.30pm every Saturday.
Apart from exhibitions at different museums and galleries in Doha, such as *Yto Barrada: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nougat, *Huguette Caland: Faces and Places, *Lived Forward: Art and Culture in Doha from 1960-2020, *Enclosed Realisties, Mawater vintage car exhibition, *Splendours of the ancient east: Antiquities from the Al-Sabah collection, and *A Falcon's Eye: Tribute to Sheikh Saoud Al Thani, the QM also offers residents and visitors a chance to take advantage of programmes such as *Sketching for Adults (at *A Falcon's Eye exhibition), the Ruq'ah Intermediate Workshop, the Diwani Intermediate Programme, the Majlis Book Club, curator-led tours of *A Falcon's Eye, the Ottoman Design workshop, and the Geometry workshop.
