* MoU inked with Sudan's Federal Ministry of Education to support EAA project
Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sudan's Federal Ministry of Education to support a project by Education Above All (EAA) Foundation with its partner Unicef, which will provide 50,000 out-of-school children with access to quality formal and informal education.
The project will focus on improvement of learning environments and capacity-building to ensure the provision of quality education for children deprived of education, in addition to increasing community participation and awareness of the importance of access to and enrolment in primary education, EAA has said in a statement.
The MoU was signed remotely by QFFD director-general Khalifa bin Jassim al-Kuwari and Sudan's ambassador to Qatar Abdul Rahim al-Siddig Mohamed, who signed on behalf of Sudan's Minister of Education Mohamed El-Amin Ahmed El-Tom, Qatar News Agency reported.
The virtual signing ceremony was attended by Minister El-Tom, who delivered the opening speech; Fahad bin Hamad al-Sulaiti, CEO of EAA Foundation; and members of the Qatari embassy in Khartoum.
The project will ensure the education of 50,000 out-of-school children who are not receiving formal education.
“This support comes as part of Qatar’s commitment towards the brothers and sisters in Sudan, and builds on a number of current development and relief projects between the two countries, which cover several areas in various states,” al-Kuwari said.
“The MoU between Qatar Fund For Development and the Sudanese Ministry of Education aims to provide quality education opportunities for out-of-school children, reaching the largest possible number of children, and developing schools and facilities to support these efforts. This project will be implemented in co-operation with our strategic partner, Education Above All Foundation, through its Educate a Child programme,” he added.
El-Tom thanked Qatar for its permanent support to Sudan in all fields, especially education, and spoke about the efforts Sudan is undertaking to advance education.
About the support provided by QFFD to implement the education project in Sudan, al-Sulaiti said: “EAA has provided quality education in several countries, including Sudan, through its partnerships with international institutions such as Unicef and UNHCR, to implement five projects, in which it sought to enroll more than 600,000 out-of-school children. And, with the partnership between Unicef and EAA Foundation, the project will target the enrolment of an additional 50,000 children without primary education, including children in rural areas, Bedouin communities, children affected by conflict and children with disabilities.”
According to the latest statistics by Unicef, Sudan has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in the Middle East and North Africa region. It is estimated that more than 3mn children, aged between five and 13 years, do not go to school.
