The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday announced the signing of two new contracts to provide 2,600 decorative lighting poles to enhance the Doha Corniche and Central Doha areas.
The project comes within the works of the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar.
The contracts were signed in the presence of Ashghal president Dr Saad bin Ahmed al-Muhannadi, executives and representatives of local manufacturing companies, the authority said in a statement.
The new lighting poles have distinguished and special design features reflecting the Qatari identity. The lighting poles to be installed along the Doha Corniche are designed in the form of the palm frond, while leaf-shaped lighting poles will be installed along the streets of Central Doha, the statement noted.
Two local companies have been contracted to supply the 2,600 locally manufactured poles to provide LED lighting along 10km of Doha Corniche (1,440 poles), from Ras Bu Abboud Bridge up to the signal near Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, and along a 2sqkm area around Central Doha (1,160 poles).
The palm frond design was chosen to decorate the Doha Corniche with the particular intention of matching the palm trees along the road. On the other hand, the tree leaf design was chosen for poles in Central Doha to match the beautification and landscaping works going on in the region in addition to enriching the Qatari identity.

Dr al-Muhannadi noted that the new lighting poles have distinct features that take into consideration the strategic importance of their locations, and are designed reflecting the Qatari identity, using Qatari ideas and manufactured at Qatari manufacturing firms. "We are proud to award the contracts to local suppliers and manufacturers," he said.
Ahmed al-Abdullah, chairman of the board of directors of Lightning Design Company (LDC), expressed gratitude to Ashghal and the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places for their support in overcoming the obstacles to get the contract for the supply of lighting poles. He also expressed pride in conceiving the palm frond design and implementing it through Qatari skills while adhering to international standards in the design and manufacture of poles and the operation of lighting units.
Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al-Nasser, vice-chairman and COO of Al Nasr Holding Company, highlighted Ashghal’s continuous support to the private sector, adding that the company is committed to the authority with respect to the quality of project outcome and its timely completion.
Hamad al-Nuaimi from Alurays Lighting Technology, which produce lighting units, said locally produced modern street lighting units
will be provided for the project. He also expressed gratitude to Ashghal for supporting local companies.
Abdul Rahman al-Ansari, chairman of Qatar Aluminum Extrusion Company (Qalex), said Ashghal greatly supports local companies. He also pointed out that for the first time in Qatar "we have locally produced safer and more sustainable aluminum columns that will last around 30 years".
