Act now by strictly following the preventative measures to avoid a second wave of Covid-19 infections, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has reiterated.
"Recently in Qatar we have seen a gradual but worrying increase in the number of new daily Covid-19 infections," the ministry said in a post on social media Saturday. "It is more important than ever that people adhere to preventive measures."
The advice comes close on the heels of a senior MoPH official recently cautioning that additional restrictions may need to be implemented and the country will return to some of the early restriction phases if the number of Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions continue to increase in Qatar over the coming week or two.
The recent gradual and consistent increase in the number of new daily Covid-19 infections in Qatar appeared to be the early signs of a potential second wave, Dr Abdullatif al-Khal, chair of the National Strategic Group on Covid-19 and head of the Infectious Diseases Division at Hamad Medical Corporation, told a news conference on Thursday.
In an advisory on social media Saturday, the MoPH reminded people to "always wear a mask when you go outside your home, maintain at least 1.5m distance from others, avoid crowded places and limit times in enclosed spaces, and wash your hands regularly".
The MoPH's caution also came on a day when the number of active Covid-19 cases in the country crossed 5,000. According to the daily data released by the ministry, 363 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours, of whom 330 were community cases and 33 travellers returning from abroad.
The MoPH also recorded 112 recoveries from the virus during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries in Qatar to 145,668.
There were a total of 5,068 active Covid-19 cases in the country as of Saturday.
Meanwhile, the crackdown on violations of precautionary measures continued as the authorities concerned referred 166 people to the Public Prosecution for not wearing masks in places where they were mandatory, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said in a tweet Saturday.
Brigadier-General Abdullah Khalifa al-Muftah, director of the MoI’s Public Relations Department, recently told Qatar TV that they are "ready to implement any decision or instructions issued by the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management or the Ministry of Public Health for the safety of all”.
The authorities would continue to conduct inspections on roads to ensure people are strictly complying with the Covid-19 precautionary measures, he stressed. These included checks to enforce the rule on passenger occupancy in vehicles and wearing of masks.
