The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) organised an online forum for the suppliers of fruits and vegetables on the importance of compliance with the GCC Standard Specifications for imported products.
The event was in co-ordination with the Ministry of Public Health's (MoPH) Food Safety Department, and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The forum reviewed the specific GCC standards for fruits and vegetables to ensure their safety and quality and questions answered by specialists from the Agriculture Affairs Department at the MME and the Food Safety Department.
It was reiterated that imported fruits and vegetables should have good colour and shape, an acceptable degree of ripeness and be free from bugs and insects, besides being properly packed with a product statement card.
Specialists at the Agriculture Affairs Department have given a training workshop on the GCC standards to the officials and employees at the various customs points of the country.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah had reported the other day that the MME plans to implement the GCC Standard Specifications on imported agricultural products from March.
