Qatar Charity (QC) implemented 56 water projects in several regions in Djibouti, benefitting more than 9,266 people during 2023, with the support of philanthropists in Qatar, a statement said Sunday. The projects included the installation of 18 surface wells powered by solar energy in three regions (Dakhl, Ali Sabieh and Tajoura regions), in addition to installing a tank, faucets and a drinking basin for animals, benefiting about 9,000 people in 18 regions.A total of 38 projects were implemented to deliver water to the homes of needy families who needed to extend water networks and deliver it to their homes, along with installing a meter and registering with the Water Corporation to obtain water on an ongoing basis, benefitting 38 families, or about 266 people, in the capital, Djibouti.Djibouti's Minister of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Livestock Mohamed Ahmed Awala praised the great role played by the QC and its efforts in implementing projects in the field of water, noting the implementation of more than 43 surface wells in different areas that will cover the water needs of the population, especially the areas that were damaged by drought during previous years. The ministry's Water Department director Saeed Khaireh noted that the QC’s interventions in the field of water provision are very important as many areas in Djibouti suffer from drought and the lack of potable water. These projects provide an opportunity for rural families to begin cultivating their agricultural lands that have become abandoned due to drought.Officials of the areas benefitting from the wells expressed their happiness with these projects and said this is the first time that wells have been established in their areas with the installation of solar energy and a tank with faucets. These components have greatly facilitated obtaining clean water, especially for children, women, and the elderly, and have reduced the hardships of drawing water from the well or having to travel long distances to obtain safe water. From 2016-2020, the QC implemented 25 wells, benefitting about 12,500 people in three provinces.
