The United Nations has decided to forwards the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories to the UN General Assembly immediately.Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, said Saturday that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, affirmed that the two-state solution is the sole applicable political track, reiterating his call for Israelis and Palestinians to engage in this long-awaited track to end the occupation and resolve the conflict, in commensurate with the international law, the relevant UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.Additionally, the UN Secretary-General reiterated his urgent call for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.Being the highest judicial body affiliated with the United Nations, ICJ considered Friday that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, since 1967, is illegal and must end as soon as possible. On December 31, 2022, the UNGA adopted a resolution requesting ICJ to issue an advisory opinion regarding the legal consequences arising from Israel's policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The ICJ opinion comes on the heels of the devastating and unprecedented war Israel has launched on the Gaza Strip since Oct.7, 2023, which has, hitherto, led to the martyrdom of 38,848 Palestinians and injuring 89,459 others, with thousands of victims still under the buildings' debris and on roads, while medical and civil defense personnel are unable to reach them.
