The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) on Wednesday announced the completion of the surface water drainage network of 7.2 km that serves the areas running from Al Hamm Street to Al-Sailiya Road.

The network, according to an Ashghal statement, is connected to another 4.4km network that Ashghal completed in November 2020 serving Fereej Al-Manaseer, South Muaither, Bu Sidra to Al Furousiya Street.

The two networks were carried out at a total length of 11.6km while serving several Western Areas in Doha such as Al-Sailiya, Al Mearad, Rawdat Al Naisar, Muaither, Bu Sidra, Southwest Muaither, Al-Rayyan East until Fereej Al-Manaseer.

While announcing the completion, engineer Fahad al-Otaibi, head of Western Areas Section at Ashghal’s Roads Projects Department, said the recently implemented project involved pipe laying works for stormwater drainage network and constructing 32 rainwater drainage manholes.

“The surface water drainage pipes within the project are laid along Al Sailiya Street, Al Hamm Street, Umm Al Shawahin Street and New Al-Sailiya Road, to tie into the pipeline in Al Waab Street up to Al Furousiya Street. The network eventually flows into Bu Sidra and Al-Manaseer pumping stations,” he explained.

Al-Otaibi added that the two completed networks provide an integrated solution to discharge surface water and stormwater in the main streets in order to reduce stormwater accumulation during the rainy season and facilitate discharging of ponds and rainwater effectively bringing down the congestion and the risk of traffic accidents in the rainy season. “They will also lower the groundwater level to protect the foundations of buildings and roads in these areas,” he said.

Both networks provide 93 tie-ins and 60 rainwater drainage manholes which serve seven areas West of Doha and they include surface water and rainwater drainage network pipelines laid at depths ranging from 7m to 23m underground. The two newly constructed networks come as part of Ashghal’s strategy to preserve the environment and public health and safety.
