Prof Syed Javaid Zaidi, chair professor of chemical engineering and Qafac chair at Qatar University (QU) has been invited to contribute in the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), the world’s largest Encyclopedia developed under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). It is regarded as the world’s largest source of thematically organised state-of-the-art knowledge for our times.
Prof Zaidi was invited based on his reputation as a world-renowned scholar in the field of clean water and clean energy, particularly Reverse Osmosis desalination processes. He is well-known in the international scientific community for his contribution in the field of water treatment and desalination.
The contributions in EOLSS are from scholars from over 100 countries and edited by more than 350 subject experts. It also includes up-to-date coverage of various aspects of sustainable development that are relevant to the current state of the world. Unesco-EOLSS is an integrated compendium of twenty-one component encyclopedias, each covering a large number of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary subjects.
Prof Zaidi has been invited to write a comprehensive chapter on “Salt and Water Transport in Reverse Osmosis, Seawater Desalination Membranes, Biofouling and Experience of SWRO in Qatar” for Unesco-EOLSS Theme on “6.107. Solar Co-generation of Electricity and Water, Large Scale Photovoltaic Systems.”
Prof Zaidi developed new cost effective methods of membrane fabrication for water purification for drinking purposes, Reverse Osmosis water purification system. He is the recipient of many national and international awards including KFUPM Excellence in Research Award, Patent Award, Almari Prize for Research Innovation and Lifetime Achievement Award by Venus International Foundation.
Recognising his outstanding research record, he has been invited to serve in the Advisory Council of Arab Water Desalination. He has been a visiting scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, a top Engineering institution in the world. He has published extensively and published more than 300 research articles in international journals and conferences. He has published more than 300 papers in International Journals/book chapters, conferences and has 14 US patents and patent applications for the new discoveries and inventions to his credit. He has delivered more than 120 presentations and talks at various international forums, conferences, symposiums, and institutions in more than twenty-five countries.
