Doha English Speaking School (DESS) recently won first Green Flag Eco Award. The eco-team worked extremely hard to develop green initiatives at DESS, whilst creating community awareness about the importance of sustainability and working together towards a better future.
The school was awarded the Green Flag for the collaborative work done by its students, teachers and staff and for the many activities and initiatives the eco-team participated in and launched. DESS reached out to the wider community and shared experiences with international eco-schools which fostered the global citizenship theme and empowered the students to inspire and lead change.
In the auditor's opinion, one of the biggest successes was the improvement of the school grounds. The team started an eco-garden where they are growing their own herbs and vegetables. They have also created shaded areas for the students to work, learn and play outside. The team has focused on reducing energy consumption across the campus, developing a points rewards system where classes get points for positive behaviour. The award was presented recently by the Qatar Green Building Council to Head of School Molloy and the DESS eco-team, led by Mac Gillicuddy.
