Local agriculture company, Agrico, is constantly trying to expand its technology and knowhow utilising any available expertise in the field, an official told Gulf Times.
Managing director Nasser Ahmed al-Khalaf said he believes that Agrico’s initiatives and plans in the pipeline could play a role in the development of Qatar’s agriculture industry, including government-related efforts on food security and self-sufficiency.
“Our plans are to expand in local production and manufacturing. For the farm production, we have in the pipeline shrimp, fish, and table egg, which will start production by the end of this year,” al-Khalaf pointed out.
He explained that the farm annual production would comprise 6,000 tonnes of mixed vegetables, 350 tonnes of shrimp, 350 tonnes of tilapia fish, and 36mn eggs per year, as well as food manufacturing from the packing salad process and the fish processing plant.
On Agrico’s other expansion plans in the pipeline, al-Khalaf noted that Agrico is pushing for the development of farms across the country to increase local production.
“We have in the pipeline several farms to be developed of a total area of 1mn sq m and we plan to develop 1mn sq m of farmlands every year until we have self-sufficient production for the market,” al-Khalaf emphasised.
Asked about the company’s plans to forge partnerships with other organisations inside and outside Qatar, al-Khalaf said: “We have very advance negotiations to export our technology and knowledge out of Qatar. We have our own patent of greenhouse technology that can produce all year long in hot and harsh environments, such as Qatar.
“Therefore, countries with hot climates are very much interested with our technology and hopefully, we will see Agrico’s greenhouses in places, such as Australia, Africa, and the GCC. We have already started with our first greenhouse technology in Oman for an area of 800,000sq m,” al-Khalaf pointed out.
