As part of the national initiative to encourage local sheep production, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Livestock Department, in co-operation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Widam Food Company, bought 9,801 sheep from Qatari farms.
The sheep were from the 30,000 registered Al-Suri, Al-Arab, Al-Harii and Al-Najdi breeds.
The joint national initiative is carried out under the supervision of a committee formed to ensure acceptable health and physical conditions for local sheep and high-quality meat. Local sheep are sold at the butcheries of Widam Food Company with two allocated to each Qatari citizen.
