The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Iraq has helped 18 families rebuild their destroyed homes in West Mosul with generous support from Qatar Charity (QC).
The recently concluded 'Reconstructing Destroyed Housing in Mosul' project contributed to supporting durable solutions to displacement in Iraq and provided support to the most vulnerable families, QC said in a statement.
“Through this project, and with Qatar Charity’s support, IOM Iraq intervened in 24 sites to remove post-conflict debris and supported 18 families to build housing units. The project also included cash-for-work opportunities and skills-training, which allowed more community members to benefit and participate in the reconstruction efforts,” said IOM Iraq chief of mission Gerard Waite.
“We are delighted with rebuilding the destroyed homes in Mosul, in co-operation with IOM, which would contribute to providing a dignified life and creating a better environment for the beneficiaries,” said Ahmed Saad al-Rumaihi, director of Emergency and Relief at QC. “Qatar Charity is proud of its partnership with IOM in supporting and completing this important project.”
Al-Rumaihi thanked IOM for concluding the project professionally and thoroughly, and the local authorities for facilitating the necessary support for the implementation of the project that drew a smile on the faces of beneficiary families. He also noted that QC is keen to work with United Nations agencies and international organizations to implement various projects for the benefit of IDPs and refugees.
“We were displaced to Salamiyah Camp until 2017. When we came back, our house was destroyed. We rented a house, but we kept hoping that one day we would go back home. This project gave us hope and now my family is back living in our house,” said Faris, a project beneficiary from Mosul.
“After the end of the Mosul crisis, we came back to see nothing but debris. I was working and living in a rented house. Without this project, I would have never thought of rehabilitating my house again,” said Sleman, another beneficiary of the project.
The projects implemented by QC in co-operation with IOM in Iraq include supporting health and protection services in Nineveh, and enhancing the capacity to prevent and control the Covid-19 pandemic. It also completed a project in response to the water crisis in Al Qurnah.
Qatar Charity is also implementing a multi-sector assistance project for people affected by the Syrian crisis, and strengthening the health system to improve access to health care services for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. It implemented a cyclone response project in Malawi.
