Qatar Museums (QM) has launched several events and activities catering to a wide array of interests and artistic passions, to be hosted across its cultural institutions throughout July.
Members of the community can look forward to a range of culturally enriching programmes designed to promote creativity and take art beyond four walls.
Children between 5 and 11 years of age are invited to join Planet Kids Club, an online monthly storytime, discussion and activity relating the museum to protecting the planet. It will take place at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) on July 9 from 10am to 11.30am
Each story is related to a monthly theme. Children will participate in crafting and learn more about museum objects. Tips on how to preserve the environment will also be shared. Those who are interested can email [email protected].
Inspired by sacred geometry, students between 12 and 14 years of age will learn about this magnificent design while producing geometric, watercolour paintings at The Flower of Life activity, scheduled July 14 from 10am to 12pm at MIA’s Teaching Room at the 2nd Floor. Residents can learn the basics of Palestinian traditional embroidery during a workshop with Feda Allouh on July 11 and 12, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The workshop is part of the MIA Library Beautiful Memories of Palestine exhibition. (To book, please email: [email protected])
At the “Ladies & Gentlemen of the Court – Collage Study”, students between 3 and 5 years old will learn the art of portraiture by observing detail and proportion in MIA’s portraits of subjects from the Persian & Mughal courts. It will take place on July 5, 12, and 19 from 4pm to 5 pm.
“While learning about courtly fashion and symbolism behind their paintings, we will create mixed media self-portraits, learning to use fashion, photography and the art of collage to produce our individual works.” QM said. (To book, please email: [email protected])
MIA is an iconic building and one of the most recognisable images of Qatar, used in many advertisements around the world. But who designed it and what makes this building so very special? Children between 8 and 11 years of age will be introduced to a modern architectural figure and will be able to understand how Islamic architecture inspired I M Pei when he designed the Museum of Islamic Art at the “Young Architects” class on July 6, from 4pm to 5pm. In accordance with the Hajj season, QM is organising an interactive webinar titled “Hajj from Qatar in the past” with Mohammed Hammam Fekri, National Museum of Qatar’s (NMoQ) Heritage and Rare Books Advisor on July 15 from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
Participants can discover how the Hajj journey was performed in the past, and what the preparations, customs and traditions associated with it are. They will explore the routes taken from Qatar to Mecca, the hardships and obstacles that pilgrims had to face in various stages of their journey, and the ceremonies and rituals that took place upon their return. The zoom webinar will be held in Arabic.

What do you know about the embroidery technique used in the covering of the Kaaba? Each year during the Hajj season, the holy Kabaa is covered with its new dress made of black silk engraved with Quranic verses from gold water. They are embroidered patterns in the style of Sirma that uses silver and gold wires.
NMoQ gives participants the opportunity to learn and practice the method of implementing the Sirma embroidery style at “The Art of Sirma Embroidery” workshop on July 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, and 17 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Fee costs QR850. (For more information, please email [email protected])
QM will hold a virtual journey, which focuses on the arrival of Islam to Qatar and its influence on the Qatari cultural heritage, July 27 (English) and July 29 (Arabic) from 12pm to 1pm.
This influence appears in many social practices, customs and traditions that are passed down through generations, and has a great impact on traditional architecture. Participants will learn about the routes, necessary preparations, the duration of the pilgrimage journey (Hajj) and the celebrations after they return. At Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Lebanese ceramist Lina Abdallah Lotfi will offer a three-day workshop on hand build clay (‘Artist Encounters with Lina Abdallah Lotfi: A vision through clay’ pottery workshop), taking place on July 11, 12, and 25 from 4pm to 7pm (limited spaces available).
Taking on a modern approach, there will be a focus on glazing and engraving. Participants will create their own piece under the instruction of Lina.
Day 1: Introduction to hand - build pottery and starting the production process.
Day 2: Engraving and decoration.
Day 3: Glazing and a showcase of the artist's latest collection.

Adults are invited to join artist Ismael Azzam for a new season of Art Lessons at Mathaf and learn techniques in portraiture drawing using pencil, charcoal and paint every Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm to 7pm.

Children aged 8 to 12 are invited to join an online experience to have fun, learn, participate in sporting activities as well as cultural development at the Kashta, Qatar Museums 2021 Summer Camp from July 4 t o11 between 9am and 12pm at Mathaf.
The museum will deliver a variety of engaging workshops. Each museum will present an exciting, fun and creative workshop to engage and entertain children. While having fun, children will learn about culture, history, arts, sports, sustainability, science and more. The camp will be held in Arabic and English and fee costs QR350. A virtual workshop titled ‘Draw Your Future’, set on July 11 (4pm to 5pm) for youths between 19 and 24 years of age, will highlight the importance of planning, making the best choices for a professional future, research mechanisms, self-discovery, and knowing the strengths and points that need to be developed in their skills, which contributes to a better life map.
The speakers will identify planning, selection and practical measurement mechanisms for achieving daily and career goals. A practical aspect of the workshop will include the distribution of a working paper containing a plan to help students invest time in building their professional future.
