Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) has recognised several recent graduates for their academic excellence.
Hadice Tahire Koc achieved the highest academic standing among the graduating class, and was named the class valedictorian. Koc was also one of three NU-Q students who graduated summa cum laude. Tony El Ghazal and Rui Xin Oh shared that honour with Koc.
This year, a record number of NU-Q graduates received academic honours. Alongside their academic achievements, the Class of 2021 included student researchers, filmmakers, journalists and student leaders.
“In these extraordinary times,” Marwan M Kraidy, dean and CEO, said, “our students have displayed amazing discipline and commitment. I am proud of their academic achievements, as well as the resilience they have exhibited in the last year of their studies.”
Latin Honours are awarded in three categories: summa cum laude recipients are in the top 5% of their graduating class; magna cum laude are students in the next 8%; and cum laude are students in the next 12%.
Eight Northwestern Qatar graduates received magna cum laude honours: Njoud Mohamed K M al-Mana, Maryam Jassim Y M al-Suwaidi, Xiruo Chen, Maryam Abdulla I H al-Badr, Mohamed Saad Ejaz, Lingyu Feng, Rumeysa Cihan Koc and Danna Mohamed Takriti.
Those receiving cum laude recognition were Alreem Ali A A al-Khater, Maha Ali A Z al-Kuwari, Tamadur Khalid M A al-Mannai, Amal Barakat, Marielle Aguelo Cortel, Inaara Nizarali Fazal Gangji, Razan Houssam Ghadban and Nada Ahmed Yousef Qaddourah.
In addition to being honoured for their academic excellence, Inaara Gangji, Rui Xin Oh, Maryam Abdulla I H al-Badr, Danna Takriti and Tony El Ghazal were also recognised for student leadership, research involvement and extracurricular participation. They received the Dean’s Award, Communication Award, Journalism and Strategic Communication Award, Liberal Arts Award and Student Leadership Award, respectively.
The Class of 2021 is NU-Q’s largest graduating class to date, with 85 graduates representing some 22 countries: Qatar, China, Egypt, Gambia, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Korea, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, Singapore, Sudan, Sweden, Syria, Tanzania, Tunisia, Ukraine and the United States.
