The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has affirmed that protecting the environment represents an important component of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Qatari constitution, as they emphasised that protection and safety of the environment represents a fundamental right of Qatari citizens, a moral responsibility towards future generations, and a clear declaration of Qatar's commitment to global trends aimed at achieving sustainable development.
This message was delivered during the ceremony held to launch the website of Al Reem Biosphere Reserve, in a speech given by the ministry's Head of Public Relations Abdullah Mohamed al-Falasi, with a number of officials and representatives from other authorities present. The ceremony included the screening of a movie that gave a comprehensive overview about the reserve and the efforts to protect it against environmental damage.
Al-Falasi said Al Reem was one of the most important reserves in Qatar, with diligent work taking place to ensure the ecosystem is preserved. He noted that it is one of the 30 reserves in 10 countries that are under the umbrella of Unesco biospheres.
He said that within the framework of working on the administrative plan for Al Reem reserve, the Department of Natural Reserves, in co-operation with the Information Systems Department and the Unesco Office in Doha, worked on redefining the areas and formulating a plan to develop and apply the geographic information system. He added that the reserve was one of the most advanced in the region in that regard. Director of Unesco Regional Office in Doha Anna Paolini praised Qatar's efforts in protecting the reserves and for launching a dedicated website.
