LuLu Hypermarket Qatar has launched the Indian Silks and Ethnic Wear Festival at its Al Gharrafa branch on the sidelines of the ongoing India Utsav 2021, which celebrates India’s 75th Independence Day. Indian ambassador Dr Deepak Mittal's wife Dr Alpna Mittal inaugurated the festival, which showcases a wide assortment of pure, natural and synthetic silks from India including saris, readymade garments, and ethnic wear like salwar-kameez, kurtas, and churidars with exciting offers.
Indian silk has a significant role to play in the export sector, and it is considered as one of the major categories of India’s exports worldwide. According to statistics from the Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC), India’s annual silk exports stand at $265.77mn in the fiscal year 2020-2021, making it one of the major industries of the country that employs large manpower and a prominent player in the export market.
ISEPC, a semi-government organisation that regulates the export of Indian silk and its products, now has more than 1,800 exporters as its members. India’s silk, which has a history of over 5,000 years, is now produced in many centres in 24 states across the country, each having its own speciality. As one of the finest products of India, silk is regarded as a fabric woven into the history of the country.
