His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani held on Friday a telephone conversation with President of the United States of America Joe Biden.
The call dealt with reviewing developments in the region, particularly the latest developments in Afghanistan. The two sides stressed on the importance of protecting civilians, the peaceful transition of power, and de-escalating tensions towards a comprehensive political solution that guarantees security and stability to benefit the Afghan people.
The US president expressed his thanks to His Highness the Amir for Qatar’s contribution to the evacuation of civilians and the country’s efforts in the peace process in Afghanistan. The call also dealt with the strategic bilateral relations between the two countries, and the scope for expanding and enhancing them.
A Reuters report quoting the White House said the US president thanked His Highness the Amir for Qatar’s “generous support” as Washington evacuates thousands of people from Afghanistan. The report added Biden as saying the airlifts “would not have been possible without the early support from Qatar”.
‘Qatar’s evacuation mission to continue’
Qatar’s evacuation missions in Afghanistan will continue, HE the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater has said.
Responding to a tweet by Clarissa Ward, chief international correspondent of CNN about thousands of people being stuck at the Kabul airport, HE AlKhater tweeted: “I can only speak on Qatar evacuation missions, they will continue! In the past 72 hours, we evacuated over 300 mostly female students & over 200 media personnel; many of them with their families & kids who are now safe in comfortable accommodation in Doha.”
Qatar to support Afghan people: GCO
Qatar will spare no effort to support the Afghan people through diplomacy, dialogue and aid, the Government Communications Office (GCO) has stressed.
“The Qatar Amiri Air Force has safely evacuated Afghan citizens, students, foreign diplomats and journalists from Afghanistan. The State of Qatar will spare no effort to support the Afghan people through diplomacy, dialogue and aid,” the GCO tweeted yesterday evening.
