Qatar University’s (QU) College of Medicine (CMED) and College of Engineering (CENG) collaborated in organising the first Artificial intelligence (AI) in Medicine Students Journal Club.
Titled 'Machine Learning in Medicine' the virtual event was attended by around 60 students from QU Health cluster, Computer Sciences and Engineering students and faculty.
The event was presented by medical students Lubna Zar (AI determines sex from images of the eye), Salma Hijazi (Screening for cardiac contractile dysfunction using an AI enabled electrocardiogram) and Reem Alsubai (AI in Musculoskeletal Imaging: Current Status and Future Direction).
Faculty mentors of the club are Prof. Sumaya Al-Maadeed, Dr. Muhammad Chowdhury (CENG), Dr. Susu Zughaier (CMED), and with collaboration of Dr Ali Ait Hussain (HMC). The student leader of this Machine Learning and Virtual reality (ML/VR) interest group is medical student Yosra Mekki.
The event objective was to introduce the club, learn about machine learning applications in medicine, stimulate interdisciplinary research and collaborations between QU Health cluster colleges and Computer Sciences and Engineering College.
AI in medical applications is expected to revolutionise healthcare delivery. For example, Machine learning and Deep Learning based X-ray and CT-scan image analysis are implemented in the field of radiology to assist in diagnosis. AI research is at the forefront of advancing the implementation of AI in Medicine.
The interdisciplinary collaborative research between CMED and Computer Sciences and Engineering at QU is needed to incorporate AI in medical education and encourage medical and engineering students to collaborate.
