In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), Huawei is running the fifth edition of its flagship annual ICT Competition in Qatar. Held under the theme ‘Connectivity, Honour, Future’, the competition will run from October until December, aimed at nurturing and empowering the future generation of the local ICT talents to effectively contribute to Qatar’s national plans and visions.Following last year’s success, the Huawei Innovation Competition is scheduled to take place for the second consecutive year in parallel with the Huawei ICT Competition, and will empower undergraduate students and their teachers to use innovative technologies – such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and big data – to create valuable and meaningful applications for society. Huawei has invited universities and colleges across the Middle East to participate in the Innovation Competition, with a total of 10 teams to be selected for the regional final this year. The competition will welcome thousands of undergraduate students from across the Middle East, including Qatar, and will be held virtually in compliance with social distancing measures. Winners of the regional competitions will receive a certification, future learning opportunities, a $20,000 cash prize and more.Dr Khalid Abdulla al-Ali, Undersecretary for Higher Education at the MoEHE, said: “The need for advanced technologies is rapidly increasing, not just in Qatar, but across the world. Innovation from our young ICT talent will be key to development of our future digital economy. Therefore, we are proud to be a part of the prestigious Huawei Middle East ICT Competition, which greatly contributes to the development of the ICT talent ecosystem in Qatar. Through our collaboration with a global leading technology company, such as Huawei, we are confident in our ability to affectively contribute in achieving Qatar Vision 2030.”Liam Zhao, CEO of Huawei Gulf North, added: “Nurturing and empowering local ICT talents has been a continuous commitment at Huawei, and we are proud to play a pivotal role in developing promising young minds and contribute in the wider economic growth of Qatar. By investing in Qatar youth, we are creating an open, collaborative ecosystem and preparing the future generation of leaders who will be responsible for the success of the Qatar digital transformation journey. We look forward to many more initiatives in Qatar and building a fully connected, intelligent world.”Last year, more than 15,000 undergraduate students from across the region applied for the Middle East ICT Competition from 443 universities and colleges. The competition was supported by 20 ministries, various ambassadors and academic chancellors from some of the Middle East’s top-ranking universities.
