The Al Shaqab Racing owned two-year-old colt Caracal (Zelzal x Caramanta) continued to impress his followers by taking the Prix De Pauillac at Bordeaux-Le-Bouscat on Thursday.
The Jean Claude Rouget trained colt remains unbeaten following his second win at Bordeaux-Le-Bouscat. Having steered Caracal to success last month, jockey Jean-Bernard Eyquem rode the colt prominently and the pair went on to take the 1,900m contest easily.
Sharper away from the stalls than on his debut, Caracal travelled keenly through the early stages of the race. Catapum (Ectot) moved through to take the lead down the back straight and took the field along at a steady pace. Tucked in behind the leader, Caracal began to settle for Eyquem. On leaving the backstraight, the front pair were a few lengths clear of the remaining five runners. Caracal travelled strongest of all seven runners on the downhill run into the straight. Catapum started to come off the bridle around 300m from the post and it was at this moment that Caracal was angled out to strike. Moving alongside Catapum with ease, Caracal breezed through to lead 200m out. Asked to extend under hands and heels, the colt went clear of his rivals and crossed the line two lengths clear of Lordrecord (Recorder) who stayed on well to take second inside the closing stages. Early-leader Catapum finished third.
Caracal is by in-form Haras de Bouqueot stallion Zelzal (Sea The Stars). His dam Caramanta (Zamindar) was unraced but is out of the listed placed Clodovina (Rock Of Gibralter). Clodovina is a sister to Canndal (Medicean), who finished second in the Group 1 Belmont Derby.
