Qatar Foundation ( QF) will be part of the crucial conversation on how to safeguard the future of the planet when the world gathers in the UK this week for the COP26 climate summit.
The conference in Glasgow is being billed as the last chance to strike vital global agreements on how to bring climate change under control, and define how the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement – which saw nearly 200 countries commit to limiting global temperature rises and move toward achieving net zero – are to be achieved.
Activists, experts and centres from QF will be participating in talks and activities at the summit, with QF’s participation in COP26 following on from its contribution to the recent Youth4Climate summit in Milan, Italy, where young people from across its community made their voices heard on climate action at a series of sessions during the historic youth-driven conference.
“As an organisation, dedicated to both embodying and leading on sustainability, we aim to play an active role in this global effort to secure a more sustainable future for our world,” said Meshal al-Shamari, director, Qatar Green Building Council, one of the QF entities participating in COP26.
“From a strategic, governance, and industry perspective, Qatar has made a clear commitment to taking climate action at a national level; and QF’s role in advancing research and technology in fields such as energy and water security, influencing sustainable policy, and empowering Qatar’s community to adopt sustainable behaviours puts us in a position to contribute to the vital conversations that will unfold at COP26.
“The power of youth to be climate action change-makers and the pivotal role of technology in shaping a greener future for the planet will be at the centre of our presence at COP26, as we aim to demonstrate – just as we did at the Youth4Climate summit in Milan - how both QF and Qatar support the global effort to meet the greatest challenge of this generation, for the good of the generations that will follow.”
THIMUN Qatar – a Model United Nations initiative that comes under QF’s Pre-University Education – will host two discussions on the role of youth in shaping a sustainable future, while two QF sessions will focus on climate education and youth empowerment, and climate justice and equity.
Experts in sustainability from QF will share their insights and perspectives on the role of non-profit organisations in combating climate change and the role of the circular economy in supporting water and food security in arid regions, with QGBC hosting a COP26 panel discussion on building a green hospitality sector.
Doha Debates will connect young climate activists in Doha and Glasgow with others in seven cities around the world through a special portal, with QF’s World Innovation Summit for Health ( WISH) staging a COP26 photo exhibition chronicling Qatar’s urban environment, with each picture allowing viewers to access WISH’s 2020 research report on the impact of climate change on health.
WISH will also present recommendations on how “dry” cities – where there is insufficient water for health in urban communities – can become both healthy and sustainable.
