A high-profile Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) delegation recently visited Kenya to strengthen ties with the Kenya Red Cross and open a new training centre for addiction survivors, under a project to construct and furnish the centre in Lamu Island, eastern Kenya.
The delegation comprised QRCS secretary-general Ali bin Hassan al-Hammadi, Relief and International Development Division executive director Faisal Mohamed al-Emadi, and Dr Fawzi Oussedik, head of International Relations and International Humanitarian Law.In the presence of the Minister of Finance in Lamu, the delegation opened the Innovation Centre for Addict Rehabilitation, first launched three years ago.The visitors took a tour of the centre and observed the handicraft and vocational training given to the inmates as part of the activities to help the survivors return to normal life.Handed over to the local authorities, the centre was constructed and furnished by the QRCS at a total cost of $1mn.It is a rehabilitation centre that serves families of Lamu, an island with a Muslim majority. Some special rehabilitation services will be given to young men suffering social/family issues due to addiction.Among the services provided at the centre is psychological and health rehabilitation, as well as vocational training requirements, as healthcare for healing addiction issues and creating job opportunities.
