* Application procedure for exceptional permit explained
Special transportation services and pedestrian crossings will be arranged to serve the Doha Corniche area during the closure from Nov 26 to Dec 4 in view of the FIFA Arab Cup and related activities, an official has said.
Buses will be provided for transportation from B-Ring and C-Ring roads starting from Souq Waqif towards Sheraton Doha. These will cover the boarding and drop-off points during the operating times of Doha Metro.
The plan was explained by First-Lieutenant Khaled al-Mulla, head of the technical team of the Corniche Closure Committee, while talking to Al Rayyan TV.
He said the Corniche bus service will be available from Souq Waqif towards Sheraton Doha with 11 pick-up and drop-off points, operating every 15 minutes. “Users can access the bus service from the seven crossings on the Corniche in conjunction with the operation of the Metro,” he said.
“Also, the 'Park and Ride' service will be available from Umm Ghuwailina, Al Messila and Qatar University. It’s possible to park the car and travel using the Metro to Al Bidda Park,” he explained.
Al Bidda Park is set to host the 11th Qatar International Food Festival November 26 to December 17, along with the Corniche from November 26 until December 4.
There will also be three open plazas along the Corniche with attractive designs to draw visitors. Also, eight interactive light and sound shows, extending from the Theatre Park to the Pearl Monument on Corniche Street, will be held from Nov 26 to Dec 19 to coincide with the food festival.
The Corniche closure, according to First-Lieutenant al-Mulla, will extend from Al Sharq Intersection towards Sheraton Intersection in the north and from Sheraton Intersection towards Port Intersection in the south. He added that along with the Corniche Road being closed to traffic, some of its exits and entries will also remain closed.
“The Corniche will witness during this period a number of events, including the food festival that will be held on the Corniche Road and Al Bidda Park. The closure will help the public cross safely and enjoy all events," he said.
For vehicles, alternative entrances and exits will be provided to access the area around the Corniche. “A-, B-, C- and D-Ring roads, along with February 22 Street and Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, will remain open and these could be used as alternatives during the closure period,” he added.
Regarding the access of government agency employees to their workplaces, First-Lieutenant al-Mulla said some 52 institutions have been given alternative routes. He explained that the affected parties are few and there will be special permits for them.
The General Directorate of Traffic has also explained how affected entities can apply for the exceptional permit during the closure period.
The Public Works Authority (Ashghal), along with the Local Organising Committee of the FIFA Arab World Cup, has established an electronic service to provide permits to the affected parties.
The application must be submitted through the responsible person designated by the institution, company, ministry or other entity concerned. The conditions for getting the permit are: the area to be accessed must be directly affected, that is, there are no alternative entrances and exits to those on the Corniche; the request will be automatically rejected if there are alternative routes to Corniche Street.
Affected parties need the following to apply for a permit:
* A letter addressed to the General Directorate of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior
* A copy of the establishment's registration
* A copy of vehicle ownership
* Pictures of both sides of the driving licence
* An application stating the vehicle number, its type and the driver’s personal number
