Qatar Charity (QC), through its office in Islamabad, has implemented a large number of sanitation projects in schools, government buildings, public places, health facilities and mosques across Pakistan in the last three years (2019-2021), aiming to contribute to addressing the water and sanitation problems in the country.
In a statement, QC said it has built 27,806 restrooms in Pakistan at a cost of QR9.6mn to benefit more than 275,000 people, including 56,164 elderly people and 6,320 persons with special needs.
Some 578 toilets were constructed in schools, especially in girls' schools, while more than 27,000 latrines were built in public places, in addition to building places for ablution.
Qatar Charity has implemented more than 200 water and sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects in Sindh province this year, benefiting 27,000 people. QC, through these projects, aims to provide safe drinking water and sanitisation facilities and raise awareness about personal hygiene in vulnerable communities.
As Qatar Charity implements such projects in partnership with international organisations, its Pakistan office signed two agreements worth QR12mn with Unicef in April to implement the WASH projects for the benefit of nearly 1mn people in Punjab and Balochistan provinces over a period of two years.
QC is currently implementing a major project for Unicef in three districts to build 15,622 toilets during the 2021-2022 period.
Figures reveal that 3.6bn people still live without safely managed sanitation, 673mn people do not have access to toilets at all, and 698mn children lack basic sanitation services at their schools, the statement adds. The United Nations designated November 19 as World Toilet Day in a bid to help
make sanitation for all a global development priority.
