Qatar University (QU) held a ceremony to honour the winners of the “University Fasih” poetry competition, held from September to October in co-operation between the Department of Culture and Arts in the Student Activities Department and the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the College of Arts and Sciences.
The contest, sponsored by Qatar Islamic Bank, was themed *International Day of Peace.
The first place was won by Hamna Noor al-Haq (College of Medicine) for her poem *O Caller of Peace.
The second place went to Mohamed Najeeb al-Sayed (College of Sharia and Islamic Studies) for his poem *The Memory of Raya Faha.
The third place was won by Saud al-Shammari (College of Engineering) for his poem *In my palm is an olive fist.
Students Affairs vice-president Dr Eman Mostafawi honoured the winners and the jury.
In a statement, Student Life and Services assistant vice-president Prof Mohamed Diab stressed that attention to culture, arts and heritage is essential to nurture a distinguished generation, aware and proud of its culture and identity, and possessing artistic and cultural tools to interact with the cultures of the world in a positive way.
Student Activities Department director Abdullah al-Mulla expressed pride in the students’ contributions that express their concept of peace.
He also stressed that the department is keen to discover creative talents in all fields of culture and arts and to provide opportunities for creativity in an academic environment.
